The Washtenaw community is invited to a groundbreaking celebration for the new Washtenaw County jail and courts building on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center (LRC). The program is scheduled as follows:

• 2:00 – 2:30 pm – Warm up with a cup of coffee as everyone begins to arrive
• 2:30 – 3:00 pm – Official groundbreaking (outside)
• 3:00-3:30 pm – Indoor reception/presentations with light refreshments
Key individuals involved in the presentations include: Mandy Grewal (Pittsfield Township Supervisor), Robert E. Guenzel (Washtenaw County Administrator), Jeff Irwin (Washtenaw County Commissioner), Daniel J. Minzey (Washtenaw County Sheriff), and The Honorable Kirk W. Tabbey (Chief Judge).
Architect and Design consultants from Tower Pinkster Titus Associates/HOK and construction consultants from Clark Construction will also join the community dignitaries at the event.
The Washtenaw County Jail expansion involves major renovations which include upgrades to the infrastructure; expansion of support services such as kitchen, laundry, medical, booking, holding cells and property storage, and adding a minimum of 112 additional beds. District Court renovations include three new courtrooms and their respective support areas. It is expected that jail and District Court renovations will be completed by the second quarter of 2010.
