A Brief History

Leon P. Clark founded Clark Construction Company in 1946, shortly after World War II ended. The main focus of the company during the early years was to help convert General Motors wartime production facilities back into automobile factories.

Leon Clark’s strong work ethic, combined with his ideology that the customer always comes first, became the foundation upon which the company was built.

In the 1960s, two of Leon Clark’s sons — John and Chuck — joined their father in the business. Clark Construction began to diversify into a much wider range of construction projects, including schools, power plants, and public works.

When John and Chuck Clark took over the helm of the business in the early 1980s, they also expanded Clark’s market presence in retail, food and pharmaceutical, and correctional facilities. Clark elevated itself to one of the top 400 general contracting firms in the United States. As the company grew, Clark Construction expanded its services to include construction management, design/build, and program management.

By the 1990s, Clark Construction was one of the largest and most reputable full-service construction firms in Michigan. The company’s portfolio expanded to include university, resort, and entertainment. During this time, a number of Clark’s projects won awards at the state and national levels, including the prestigious Build America Award. In addition, Clark's long history of ethical business practices was recognized during the company’s 50th anniversary with a national American Business Ethics Award. In fact, Clark Construction Company remains the only construction contractor in the nation to receive this distinction.

Since then, Clark Construction has gone on to develop an award-winning safety program, as well as an award-winning training program. The company is on the leading edge of construction trends and technology, including LEED (green building), Building Information Modeling (BIM), and the best estimating, scheduling, and project management tools available.

For more than sixty years, Clark Construction Company has continued to grow and thrive, constantly pushing the edge through savvy evolution and award-winning performance, while remaining true to its founding principle — that the customer always comes first.
