Michigan State University Spartan Stadium Expansion

1269433775_thumb 1269433822_thumb 1269433831_thumb 1269433865_thumb

The Spartan Stadium expansion and renovation added a new ten-story sky box structure to the stadium, featuring 24 luxury suites, 862 club seats, 1,700 new upper deck seats, press boxes, office space, and new concessions space. Originally built in the 1920s, with a major expansion in 1956, the stadium needed foundation modifications to carry the additional load of the expansion. Hydraulically pushed micropiles (HPM) were determined to be the best solution, as the micropiling equipment fits into very narrow spaces with little overhead clearance, and where vibrations from traditional pile driving equipment can damage the existing structure. The HPMs eliminated the need for demolition of existing walls, thus saving demolition and reconstruction costs, as well as 4 to 5 weeks on the schedule.

The new 278,000 sq. ft. Stephen M. Ross School of Business is a 6-story building with tiered classrooms, a 500-seat auditorium and colloquium, faculty offices, and student service activities space. Its main entrance provides a gateway to the business school campus with a glassed-in "winter quad" known as the Davidson Winter Garden —a bright, airy and highly visible community space containing the Siegle Cafe and informal meeting and study spaces.

Project elements include an ascending copper roof, terracotta/glass exterior skin, and roof terraces and gardens.

The new Ross School of Business project faced many challenges including a fast track schedule, a tight construction site, an elegant but exacting modern design, and a palette of materials that was sourced from around the world. I am happy to say that the Clark Construction team rose to these challenges and now the School of Business is enjoying the fruits of your labor.

The 478,000 sq. ft. Biomedical Science Research Building is a state-of-the-art laboratory and research facility for the University of Michigan Medical School. The enormous structure encompasses an entire city block and all work, including steel erection, had to be done within the footprint of the building. It has five major components: two rectangular blocks of laboratories, a curved ribbon of offices, an atrium created by the space between the office ribbon and the laboratories, an elliptical 300-seat auditorium, and underground research support space.

The complex building exterior features a curved glass double curtain wall system on the office ribbon; a terracotta, stainless steel, glass, and aluminum rain screen system on the laboratories; and a zinc panel, architectural concrete, and granite exterior on the elliptical auditorium.
