The Petoskey Public Library expansion involved two existing buildings across the street from each other: the Carnegie Library -- a gift of the Andrew Carnegie Foundation in 1908 -- and a former Ameritech Building. The bulk of the construction occurred at the Ameritech Building, which included the construction of a 6,000 sq. ft. addition to the existing 19,000 sq. ft. structure, and significant interior demolition and remodeling. This structure became the Main Library, and the Carnegie Library was restored as meeting space. Clark Construction Company served as Construction Manager for this fast-track 12-month construction project in northern Michigan.

This 1920s building was saved from demolition by a community initiative to renovate it to house the Charlevoix Public Library. The 28,000 sq. ft. building was updated throughout and two additions totaling 6,000 sq. ft. were constructed. In addition to the main stacks, the new library includes a children’s activity room, Michigan archives, community room for up to 150 people, quite study rooms, and a computer center.

A vertical expansion added a fourth floor to MSU’s main library. Day-to-day use continued for the 40,000 student campus throughout the construction duration. The complexity of this project was further challenged by the need to protect the surrounding 120-year-old Beal Botanical Gardens, the oldest continuously operated university botanical garden of its kind in the United States.
