The new 150,000 sq.ft. Michigan State Police Headquarters building has five levels with approximately 30,000 sq.ft. per level.  The building includes a High Security Command and Data Center for Federal and State Homeland Security.  This soundproof area is protected by five layers of security and includes dedicated conduits, data lines, secure switchgear and panels.  The electrical loading has 100% generator back-up and redundancy.  The area is protected by a dry FM200 fire protection system.    The building structure is blast proof with both vertically and horizontally reinforced walls and security glazing.  Computer access flooring comprises approximately 120,000 sq.ft. of the floor area.  A 2,600 sq.ft. fitness area is equipped with state-of-the-art strength and aerobic machines, and free weights.

Due to the highly visible location of the site, much of the security was designed to be invisible to citizens.  A secure buffer was created via landscaping and retaining walls to prevent vehicles from driving through the fence into the building.  The entire site is surrounded by high security fencing with a guard shack allowing admittance to the secure parking area.

Recycled materials were incorporated during the construction and the building is LEED Silver certified.
