Jessica Johnson, Project Controls Engineer
What do you love about the construction industry?
I love how the construction industry and/or projects are so diverse and ever changing. Projects can range from small to large but also be so very different from market-to-market such as: K-12, higher education, hotels, casinos and so many more.
Advice you would give other women entering our field?
I would say, be confident in your knowledge, surround yourself with people you admire so that you can absorb knowledge and never hesitate to ask questions – being humble and curious can get you far!
Your favorite part of your work and why?
In my position in the construction industry I have had the joy of working in the field and in operations, supporting other projects in the field through training. One of my favorite site projects was the Twelve Oaks Mall Renovation and Additions. We had a very large team and were working for a large national client. This is also where my knowledge and love for the construction took off! However, my all-time favorite “project” is training others. I train new hires and provide continuing education for all Clark employees on our project management software and procedures. There is an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I get knowing that I can take the knowledge I have accumulated and share it with others to assist them in running/completing their projects in the field.
What professional organizations are you a part of or recommend?
I recommend taking advantage of any professional organization that interests you as an individual or any opportunity to expand your knowledge. Put yourself in situations where you can fill the holes in your expertise.
What are your hobbies or what do you like to do in your spare time?
My children are by far my favorite hobby. I am a mom of two beautiful daughters and a bonus daughter. With what little spare time I do have, it is spent with them. We usually have very busy nights and weekends with school activities, sporting events, hunting, and just enjoying our time together
