Kimara Mayberry, Human Resources Training and Development Coordinator
What do you love about the construction industry?
I love the vast amount of opportunities available for anyone willing to work hard and be amazing at their craft, be it skilled trades, Administrative, or Executive Leadership and everything in between. The sky is the limit if you are willing to put in the work and excel at what you do.
Advice you would give other women entering our field?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, effectively network within the company and externally through professional organizations and continuing educational opportunities, and find a champion and a mentor willing to show you the ropes and help you open doors to opportunities. Be willing to reach out and lend a helping hand to other women that are coming up behind you. Sometimes they may need a questioned answered, or a listening ear, as they navigate their career paths. Be prepared to do both. But most importantly, be ready and prepared when learning and advancement opportunities present themselves to you. None are too big or too small.
Your favorite part of your work and why?
My favorite part of my job is being a resource and a connecter to educational and career development opportunities within our company and externally. Not only am I am ambassador internally, for all of the resources we offer our staff, I also am honored to be an ambassador within the community. I sit on a lot of boards and committees in the community with people, who can identify even more resources and educational opportunities, I can use to advance Training & Development for our staff.
What professional organizations are you a part of or recommend?
Because my job is part of the Human Resources Team here at Clark, the professional organizations I’m a member of, are related to HR and Training and Development, as well as specific to Women in the Construction Industry.
- Association for Talent Development (ATD)
- National Association for African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR)
- National Association of Black Women in Construction (NABWIC)
- National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC)
- Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
I recommend that people join organizations that offer both continuing educational opportunities as well as networking opportunities with leaders and content experts that can help take them to the next level in their careers.
What are your hobbies or what do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to read, and listen to audio books. My guilty pleasure is romance novels. But because I’m in law school, I don’t have a lot of time to read for pleasure, I’m usually reading case law, and briefing cases for class and listening to class lectures instead of audio books.
I also love to run, and am currently training for several half marathons in the Spring. I am a marathoner (26.2 miles), Half Marathoner (13.1) and an Ultra Marathoner( any distance above 26.2 miles, in my case 31 miles). I’ve run a 50K Ultra Marathon (31 miles), 47 half marathons (13.1 miles), 4 marathons (26.2 miles) and numerous 5K and 10K races. I prefer distance running instead of shorter distances, so I strength train in the gym and train with distances ranging from 3-8 miles during the week and long training runs of 10 miles or more on the weekends, depending on what distance race I’m training for at the time.
